An Honorary IrishmanAn honorary Irishman Charlton spent a brief time outside of football before being approached to manage the Irish. Ireland had some great individual players at the time, including Brady, Whelan and o'Leary, but had no history of qualifying for major tournaments. Charlton, with a little luck, astute tactics, strong organisation and the crafty stretching of the eligibility rules, managed to change that. He approached players with even the most tentative Irish links to hook up with the Republic - Aldridge and Houghton- for example, were deemed to be eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland as their grand parents were Irish. Ireland qualified for Euro 88 in Germany, and were drawn against England in their group. The World Cup winner with England found himself plotting their downfall as a manager, and he duly delivered; an early Houghton goal was enough to beat England 1-0. Ireland subsequently drew 1-1 with the USSR but went out of the competition when they lost 1-0 to eventual champions Holland. Ireland were just 9 minutes from making the semi final as they only needed to draw this game. Charlton was rewarded with the runner-up prize in the World Soccer Manager of the Year awards in 1988. Charlton developed a love for the Irish lifestyle, and for his position as Republic Of Ireland manager, and the people of Ireland returned this with a passion. Under Charlton, Ireland qualified for WC90 for the first time ever. In an eventful competition, the unfancied Irish qualified from the group stage after drawing all 3 games against England (1-1), Egypt (0-0) and Holland (1-1). They famously defeated Romania in the second round match which went to penalties after a 0-0 draw, before meeting the Pope at the Vatican. Charlton admitted that at one point during the service he actually fell asleep. Ireland eventually went out to the hosts Italy in the quarter finals by just a single goal. It was a tremendous achievement for a team with no previous World Cup history. Over 500,000 fans lined the streets of Dublin to welcome the team home. Several Irish songwriters waxed lyrical about Big Jack. Songs like "Give It A Lash Jack" and "Put 'em Under Pressure" (Republic of Ireland Football Squad) actually topped the Irish charts during 1990. The Pogues & The Dubliners released "Jack's Heroes" in support of the 1990 World Cup side. Ireland failed to reachEuro 92 despite going through qualification unbeaten, but qualified again for WC94 in the US, where Charlton infamously had a pitch-side argument with a linesman who was delaying a substitution during Ireland's match with Mexico which they lost 2-1, he was later fined (although he claimed in his autobiography that he never actually paid the fine) and was suspended for the final group match in New York where he watched from the stands, Ireland drew the match 0-0 against Norway. In the tournament, Ireland defeated favourites Italy in their opening game 1-0 during the group phase, but eventually went out to Holland in the second round losing 2-0. Charlton was awarded the freedom of the city of Dublin in 1994 Ireland failed to qualify foEuro 96 despite a strong start to the group when they won their opening 3 games. Ireland then stuttered badly drawing at home to Northern Ireland 1-1 (Ireland had won the match in Belfast 4-0 only 3 months earlier) and although they beat the highly fancied Portuguese the Irish then endured an embarrassing 0-0 draw at Liechsentein before losing twice to Austria. Although they defeated Latvia, Ireland needed to beat Portugal in Lisbon to qualify outright but lost 3-0. In an emotionally charged play off at Anfield against Holland, Ireland lost 2-0. Charlton resigned shortly after the game. His involvement in the game since has been restricted (by his own choice) to punditry and speaking. He remains an extremely popular and welcomed person in Ireland to this day. LINKS and THANKS TOCrusaders AFC Development Site |
